St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Hazardville, Conn. 55.

View of a brownstone church seen through a grove of Elm trees. This image is part of a series made by one of the three Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographers assigned to cover New England or upstate New York. The quest for images that would be saleable as postcards resulted in the documentation of small towns and small town life at the turn of the 20th century. As the photos were shot, the glass plates were sent back to Belfast, Maine, and processed into postcards at the printing plant on High Street. This architecturally striking Neo-Gothic church, comprised of a gable roofed sanctuary with a tower and spire rising from the ground from one corner, was designed by Chauncey Graham, architect from Jersey City, New Jersey. Built in 1863, the project was paid for by town industrialist, benefactor and namesake, Col. Augustus George Hazard. His business, the Hazard Powder Company, employed much of the town's population.
