Main St., Hazardville, Conn. 1.

View of a residential streetscape lined by mid-19th century houses and overhung with mature Elm trees. This image is part of a series made by one of the three Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographers assigned to cover New England or upstate New York. The quest for images that would be saleable as postcards resulted in the documentation of small towns and small town life at the turn of the 20th century. As the photos were shot, the glass plates were sent back to Belfast, Maine, and processed into postcards at the printing plant on High Street. Modest Victorian houses with front stoops and porches stand on either side of an unpaved street. A brownstone church is visible at the left. The whole scene is sheltered by leafed out Elm trees, which contribute to the sense of a peaceful summer day. A large wooden sign outside one of the houses advrtises "STOP - Try our Sodas/ Ice Cream..."
