Rumford Point is a village in Rumford, Maine, across the Androscoggin River from another village, Rumford Corner. A ferry operated near this intersection; as indicated by the sign in the background, the landing was reached by taking the right fork. The large homes lining the road were no doubt farmhouses less than a century earlier. This sleepy hamlet contrasted markedly with the nearby economic hub of Rumford; the river (known colloquially as the "Scrog") historically powered saw- and gristmills there, and since the late 19th century has also powered paper mills.
