North Anson, Maine Prior to 1900 J92C

This early photo shows a section of Main Street in North Anson, a village in Anson, Maine situated along the Carrabassett River near its confluence with the Kennebec River. The location is different from that shown in LB2010.9.120425, but the date is roughly the same. In the foreground at right, a small roofed wooden structure sits on a grassy island; it appears to be a cap for an old village well. The island in turn seems to mark a roundabout at an intersection. The street is lined with brick and wooden buildings housing various businesses, including a pharmacy and one of the town's several churches at the end of the row; the rest are simply named for their proprietors, and their functions are unclear. A few men wearing coats and hats on this summer day stand scattered throughout the frame, on the wooden sidewalk and across the street on a covered porch. Two buggies (one with a horse hitched at front) stand at the sidewalk. In the distance, the street bends out of site to the right and crosses a light bridge.
