Basket Island - Saco Bay Maine E111C
Image, taken offshore probably from a small boat, of Basket Island with several turn of the century (c. 1900) summer houses. Just one tree is visible on the small, otherwise barren island, located in Saco Bay off the entrance to the Saco River. Basket Island was the seasonal home of a few Rusticators, people with the money to build simple but commodious summer homes on unspoiled stretches of the Maine coast during the 1890s into the early 20th century. Basket Island has a low-tide sand connection to the mainland.
