East Main Street, Edmeston, N.Y. 9.
View looking straight up a gently inclining street in the commercial district of a quiet town on a summer day. Two-story buildings and homes line the blocks on either side. A couple of men stand outside a shop while two women stride up the sidewalk beyond. The dirt roadway, coursed with the narrow tire tracks of early autos, is smoothly graded and furnished with drainage ditches and paved crosswalks. The construction of these recent facilities for pedestrians, including sidewalks, was likely in response to the increase in automobile traffic. Visible are L.W. Burlison Hardware Store, a Harness/Wagon shop, and a barber pole marking a barber shop. A sign advertises ice cream. This is part of a series of images made by one of the three Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographers assigned to New England or upstate New York. The glass plates would be sent back to Belfast, Maine, and processed into postcards at the printing plant on High Street.
