Lake St. Bergen N.Y. 83
The main commercial street of Bergen, NY seen through a forest of recently placed utility poles. The photographer sights directly down the upaved street, taking in several blocks of later 19th-century buildings, and street life on a warm summer day. A railroad crossing with an early style warning sign and crossing gates are visible in the distance. Horses hitched to buggies and early automobiles alike are parked along the curb. Small groups of men stand outside storefronts and share news and gossip. This is one of a series of images made in upstate New York state by one of the three Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographers assigned to New England or New York state. The glass plates would be sent back to Belfast, Maine, and processed into postcards at the printing plant on High Street.
