Color negative of aerial photo of Widow Island, in the Fox Island Thorofare off the east side of North Haven, Maine. In 1885 the U.S. Navy built a temporary quarantine station here to isolate sailors re-entering the country from foreign ports, especially Panama. The fear was Yellow Fever, however, no one with the diseaase was ever housed there. In 1904, due to new scientific understanding about the illness, the station was determined to be unnecessary and the 50-bed brick hospital was torn down. The island was subsequently used as a convalescent site for people with mental illness. [Carl Little, Island Journal, 2016.]
