John Paul Jones Memorial Park-Kittery, Maine D136

This black & white photograph of John Paul Jones Memorial Park in Kittery, Maine features its large central memorial (by sculptor Bashka Paeffin) dedicated to the sailors and soldiers of the state of Maine.  The park, named for famed American Revolutionary War hero, John Paul Jones was established in 1926.  The face of the low-relief sculpture's main subject is obscured by a large wreath and two crossed American flags. This figure, cradeling a baby, is flanked by two drowning men and smaller depictions of WWI era infantrymen. Steps lead up to the monument, which is set in a grove of trees and bounded on each side by streets. Late 30's to early 40's cars can be seen parked on either side.
