South Main Street, Presque Isle, Me. A336
View of South Main Street, Presque Isle, Maine. Seen in this view, on the left, are private homes where a number of women are seen chatting on the front porch of one of them. St. Mary’s Catholic Church can be seen on the left just before the trees. In the trees is a business which displays a sign foir Pickwick Ale as well as a Mobilgas sign. The business district can be seen in the distance. On the right side of the street is the Sears. Roebuck & Co.store with the Aroosstook Valley Railroad office just beyond, followed by a sign for the Sears Service Station. Note how busy the street is with numerous automobiles traveling on the street as well as many parked along both sides of the street. Also seen, in the distance are signs for Philco (presumably an appliance store) and Gulf Oil (presumably a service station). Additionally a woman and her daughter are seen walking along the side of the street. The license plate on the nearest auto, on the right, is consistent with the photograph being dated as taken in 1948. On both sides of the street one can see1940s vintage Duncan Miller Model 3D Parking Meters.
