Color transparency. c. 1960, of U.S. Route 1 crossing the Passagassawaukeag River River in Belfast. ME. The bridge shown was built in 1921 at the foot Pierce Street, which goes straight up the hill. In 1962 the Route 1 bypass around Belfast opened, and traffic began using the new Veterans Memorial Bridge high above the river. The old bridge was rebuilt in 2006 and dedicated as the Armistice Footbridge in 2010. Across the rivera sardine carrier is docked at the Stinson Canning Company, which processed sardines from to 20 , and Maplewood Poultry Company, a chicken processing plant. The houses across the top of the image are on High Street. The industrial building on the right is a shoe factory.
