"Louisberg Hotel. Bar Harbor Me. 247." [Louisburg Hotel] According to Earle Shettleworth Jr. in his book, Bar Harbor, this hotel was located on Atlantic Avenue and was originally named the Atlantic House. It was built on the same site of an earlier incarnation of the hotel which burned in 1873. In 1887, it was purchased by Mrs. M.L. Balch of Boston and renamed for Louisburg Square in the same city. Mrs. Balch enlarged the building twice, adding such amenities as central heating, electric lights, a telephone, baths, and an elevator. After being resold a number of times and enjoying a busy, illustrious career, the business folded and the building was razed in 1939 after the stock market crash which precipitated the Great Depression.
