Colonial Theatre, Central Maine Power Co., Whitcomb's Cafe "Colonial Theater, High Street, with Phoenix Block at the right." --Earle Shettleworth, 2011 "The photo was taken on the day the new sign went up, which is why the sign company truck is parked in front. The old sign, featuring the movie Ramona, is sitting on the sidewalk. Date is unknown. The movie listed on the sign, "Ramona" was made in 1936, but was most likely not shown that year." -- Therese Bagnardi, Colonial Theatre owner, 2012 "Central Maine Power Co. bought out the local Belfast-based Penobscot Bay Electric Company in 1921. They opened a customer service office on High Street, soon after the purchase. They were in that location for close to fifty years. Whitcombs: A Maine landmark for decades. A Maine Central Bus stop, many passengers stopped and ate their evening meals (with the driver) on the evening run to Bangor. I don't know when it opened, but it was still going strong into the 1960s. Menu says: Open Day and Night; Our Regular dinners served from 11-2:30; C. J. Whitcomb, proprietor; From a menu, undated, but it must be post war, judging from the prices. 16 kinds of soups, stews and chowders, Lobster plain boiled 1.00, Fried lobster 1.25 salads, 8 types of potato dishes ranging from 5 cents to 10 cents, 29 sandwich choices All those old time favorites: Welsh rarebit, crackers & milk, salt cod and pork scraps, dropped eggs on fish hash. From the July 1930 issue of the Colonial Theatre News, a four-page newsletter: Whitcombs ad: Whitcomb's Electric Café "Dainty hot weather lunches" "Our restaurant is the coolest stop in town - Dine here and keep cool." At the same time, the Colonial is advertising: "Arctic Nu Air, Keeps you cool." Whitcombs Café, also went Art Deco. The original storefront was modest brick and glass, sometime in the 1930s they added a glass and chrome façade. A little hard to see in the photo, but the new façade is there." -- Megan Pinette, Belfast Historical Society 2012
