Originally called Sand Point, Manchester Point was the first place of settlement by John Manchester, who came from Machias with his wife, Comfort, and their son, John, in 1775. It was known as Sand Point because it provided sand for mortar used in early house foundations. The house at the end of Manchester Point is Indian Head House, built by Ansel Manchester, great-grandson of John Manchester. The steamer wharf is to the right with its lift on the end.
