R. R. Station, Brooks, Maine 3

"R. R. Station, Brooks, Maine 3" [included in the exhibit "Waldo County Through Eastern's Eye"] Yankee Blade Building and Brooks Railroad Station - Can you imagine the time when newspapers were printed in Brooks? Look for a moment at Yankee Blade Hall beside the station, named for the paper that was published there from 1896 - 1899. The Yankee Blade was purchased by a corporation formed in Brooks with a capital stock of $20,000, and the plant was moved here. Also the Waldo County Advocate was published for a brief period here in 1906. Ironically, we have two copies of the Waldo County Advocate at the Brooks Historical Society museum, but not a single copy of the Yankee Blade. Considering that it was published for three years, it is still possible that a copy exists out there somewhere. The Yankee Blade was sold in 1899 to the W.W. Ladd Company of Waterville and moved there. Yankee Blade Hall was used also for public purposes from 1872 - 1914. The date for this picture is not known. Maine Central Railroad terminated its lease January 1, 1926, after which Belfast and Moosehead Railroad Company operated as an independent railroad. Notice the railroad workers in the distance.
