Farm House with Connected Out Buildings

This photograph shows a farmhouse and its connected outbuildings and barn. The camera sights up a grassy slope to the structures which are arranged in the "big house- little house- back house- barn" composition typical of 19th century northern New England famsteads. There are other structures, probably with specialised functions, farther to the left of the barn. The house-- a cape from the second quarter of the century-- and its outbuildings, are clapboarded, while the barn is shingled. The structures form a somewhat sheltered, likely south-facing dooryard where chores could be performed out of the harsh north wind. The barn's long back roof slope also suggests this orientation. A woman stands facing the photographer, while another has paused her horse and carriage beside a small cedar tree. Behind her is a water pump and a huge pile of firewood. There are several fruit trees in the yard.
