Searsport, Maine 196

This photo shows a residential section of Main Street just east of Mechanic's Hollow, which is visible in the distance at the left. The focus of the image is a row of similar, 19th-century one-and-one-half story cape style houses behind a line of telephone poles and stately elm trees. The homes appear to have been built around the same time period - 1830s or 1840s. All have symmetrical 4-bay, clapboarded facades, inset front entrances, and two chimneys. The house on the right was evidently updated ca. 1865 with an Italianate front porch, a projecting bay on the side, and a back porch with decorative woodwork.
