Riverside Casino, Southport, Maine 52
"Riverside Casino, Southport, Maine 52" Riverside Casino, Southport, Me. 52. The Riverside Casino was a center of Southport's social scene until September 5, 1937, when it was the scene of a spectacular fire. During Prohibition in the 1920s and '30s the Casino saw several "raids" in which the Feds searched for contraband liquor. It is recalled that several customers escaped by leaping from the porch where people are shown in the picture. Just beyond the Casino is visible the wooden bridge to Boothbay replaced by the current steel bridge in 1939. In its later years the bridge was so rickety that the school bus stopped to let all the children off before crossing the bridge. The children walked across to re-board the bus on the other side lest the bus be lost and children be drowned Donald Duncan
