Belfast, Maine, Building Stewart Block on Main Street across from the Post Office. At the time of this photo, the building offered lodgings. The Christian Science Church (a reading room perhaps) occupied the building to the right. The John Stewart house was originally built by Samuel Peck, a cabinet worker. The house now bears little resemblance to the house built by Samuel Peck sometime between his arrival in Belfast in 1804 and when he obtained a deed for the identical lot that Peck's buildings stood on in 1823. Many of Belfast's early houses were constructed before title to the land passed. The Peck house was originally a wooden frame house with a lawn in front. An ell was added by John Stewart, the building encased by brick and a French roof was added. Currently the house sits on the sidewalk, having lost the front lawn when Main Street was widened from a two rod (33') road to a four rod (66') road. After John Stewart, the house was owned by the McNeillys.
