Belfast, Maine, Shop, Pullman Pants Factory The Pullman factory, located on Bridge Street, was established here circa 1919. John Pullman, of New York, is President, and was here for sometime when the factory was first established, later returning to New York taking care of the purchasing and sale department and who made monthly visits to Belfast. His brother Joseph Pullman, was manager of the Belfast, Searsport, Stockton and Brooks factories employing about 200 people. Both men and women are employed and some 500 dozen per week of men's trousers of cotton and wool and riding breeches were manufactured. The goods were sold all over the country. The buildings were light and airy, and the machines all ran by electric motors, while every precaution was taken to safeguard the workers. This was especially true of the Belfast plant where a sprinkler system was installed in the one story building and the finest cutting and pressing machinery of the latest models and the latest equipment for the sewing was installed. All work was sent out from Belfast to the various branches, and was returned here to be finished. It was one of the growing industries of Belfast, and turned out high grade work, and enjoyed the reputation of never stopping down for a period of over 15 years.
