"View from Rock End Hotel, Mount Desert Island/ Northeast Harbor, Me. 29t." Hotel, Waterfront, Car, Foot Bridge, Roadway "View looking west from the front of the Rock End Hotel. The Rock End Hotel was built by Herman L. Savage, brother of Fred Savage, its architect, in 1883-4. It was later expanded multiple times. Across Gilpatrick’s Cove is W.W. Vaughn’s cottage The Ledge, designed by Fred Savage in 1892. The bridge from the Rock End Side of the cove had been built for the hotel’s boat livery, though Vaughn extended the bridge to cross the the entire cove. This completely cut off Brown and Gilpatrick’s store at the head of the cove, and after much debate Vaughn put a sliding section into the walkway. This is visible just on the far side of the extension to the south. The site of the lawn in the the foreground at one point had a small building which served as a contractor’s shop, and in 1946 Horace Bucklin constructed a clubhouse for the Northeast Harbor Fleet designed by Roger Griswold."--Willie Granston, 2011
