"View at Mount Desert Island/ Northeast Harbor, Me. 26t." Harbor, Waterway, Mountains, Buildings, Boat "View from the western shore of Smallidge Point looking toward Manchester Point on the right and Fernald Point on the left. At the very far right is the lift mechanism for the steamboat wharf. It was used to raise and lower the ramp on the pier to allow easy access to the cargo compartments of the steamers. On Manchester Point the large white house on the end is Ansel Manchester’s Indian Head, which he used as a small inn. Behind it is Samuel Duncan Sargeant’s Grasslands. Further to the right, the large house is Torworth, another cottage built by Ansel Manchester as a summer rental cottage. These three houses were designed by Northeast Harbor architect Fred L. Savage in 1887, 1886, and 1901, respectively. Behind the steamer wharf can barely be seen the low profile of the Northeast Harbor Swimming Club. The pool, which sits on the shore, was filled at high tide and then gates were closed to keep the water in. This original setup is still used, though much restored."--Willie Granston, 2011
