Thomaston Road, St. George, ME. 43
Thomaston Road, St. George, ME. Rural road with houses, hall with sign in mid distance left. At the time of this photograph, the house on the right (partial view) was owned by John Ewell of the J. A. Ewell store (LB2013.22.122593). It is currently owned (2017) by Crhristopher Stickney. Christopher's father was Alden Stickney, who worked at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and for various federal fisheries agencies as a marine ecologist. In his retirement, Alden became known as a prolific photographer and a painter of ship portraiture. The first house on the left with the wood pile in the front yard belonged to Lew Robinson, who inherited it from his grandfather, Captain Paul Fuller. Lew lived with his grandparents after his father, George Robinson died in 1885. The building in the center was the Robinson Brother's Store; It was built in 1850s or 1860s. it was torn down prior to 1930. Prior to the construction of the Grange Hall, the upstairs was used as a hall for dances, for presentations of "dramas," and other festive occasions and Grange meetings. Albert Robinson recalled attending dances in the 1870s with his widowed father, Capt. Sylvanus Robinson. He particularly remembered a popular dance, "The Lancers" by Old Knowle's Orchestra probably from Thomaston or Rockland.
