GLADIATOR
Bill Zuber and Stuart Hancock owners of GLADIATOR Friendship Sloop Sail Number 71. A Friendship Sloop originally built by Alexander "Bug" McLain,March 1902, for Daniel Simmons of Waldoboro at a cost of $450. Sailed first without an engine,after WWII she was taken to Chesapeake Bay for fishing with an engine installed. In 1965 Bill Zuber and Stuart Hancock bought the GLADIATOR and sailed it to Maine. The original keel was made of iron window weights. This was replaced in the mid '80's by E.Perry & Son in Portland with a 3,890 lead keel. The original white oak framing was covered with cotton and epoxy by Zuber. Harold Clossey of Camden made new main,jib and top sails with total area of 1,308 square feet. Total restoration took 4 years.
