Schooner WILLIAM KEENE
Leavitt E. Coffin, age 72, with drawing of schooner on which he sailed into Rockland in 1922 at age 15. Drawing by Bob Corden(?) of Bangor,Maine. Built at Damariscotta in 1866 and used by her owners under sail for W.H.Shurtleff Company who used the coastal schooner to carry salt, peat moss and other cargo coast wise. While thus employed the Schooner WILLIAM KEENE set many speed records. Later she sailed to warmer waters and brought cargos of coconuts to Tampa, Florida for the Peter Paul Candy Company. The WILLAIM KEENE had a length of 67 feet 4 inches with a beam of 20 feet 2 inches and a draft of 7 feet 5 inches. A gas screw was added in 1943.
