ROBERT F. O'HARA

The new fishing vessel ROBERT F. O'HARA was launched August 7, 1971. William Seavey of Owls Head and Coastal Electronics installed the fish finder, loran, single sideband radio and other electronic equipment in the wheelhouse. The 109 foot steel side trawler was the one of several built by Harvey F. Gamage Shipbuilder, Inc., at South Bristol, Maine for Dorothy M. O'Hara,, Inc., associated with Frank J. O'Hara & Sons of Rockland, Maine. Designed by John W. Gilbert Associates of Boston, she had a 24 ft. beam and 12 foot draft, displacing 305 tons. Her fish hold was 7,400 cubic feet. Built under the US Fishing Fleet Improvement Act, it was financially subsidized by the federal government, another first for Gamage.
