The Brooksville-Castine ferry ready to cross the Bagaduce River in 1890.

The Brooksville-Castine ferry ready to cross the Bagaduce River in 1890. Ferry crossed from North Castine to West Brooksville. Vessel is a small scow, appears to propelled by poling. Just loaded aboard is a long, low, light, open buckboard of the type developed in Maine to carry guests to resort hotels from steamboat or railroad terminals. This one appears to seat about 12. Beached dories in foreground. note: for a very similar image, different day, just off the beach, but same buckboard, see www.historicnewengland.org, the website of the form SPNEA, now Historic New England
