Sail training Bark-3 of the HORST WESSEL class, probably the Portuguese SAGRES II.

Sail training Bark-3 of the HORST WESSEL class, probably the Portuguese SAGRES II. Sister ship HORST VESSEL became the USCGC EAGLE. Both were taken from Germany by US as war reparations. Built as ALBERT LEO SCHLAGETER, she went to Brazil in 1948 as GUANABARA, was sold to Portugal in 1961. All of these vessels have undergone updates. This early photo shows her with 6 yards on the two forward masts, while today there are 5. Bulwarks have been added at the bow since this photo was taken.
