A.J. FULLER
229' ship A.J. FULLER built by John McDonald in 1881 in Bath, Maine. Weight and Dimensions: 1673 gross tons, 229.3' LOA x 41.5' beam x 26.0' depth. This classic 'Downeaster' was owned and operated by Flint & Co. of New York until she was sold in 1899 to the California Shipping Company. Under Flint ownership, her masters were all from Searsport. For her first eleven years she sailed in the New York- San Francisco- Liverpool trade, then carried case oil (kerosene) to the Orient and general cargo and coal to Hawaii from eastern United States ports. The California Shipping Company used her in the Australian - Pacific Northwest lumber trade. About 1909, the FULLER was sold again, to the Northwestern Fisheries Co. of Seattle. On 10/18/1918, while anchored off Seattle in Puget Sound, the FULLER was run down and sunk by the Japanese steamship MEXICO MARU. Ship A.J. FULLER under full sail. See painting 1990.4.1
