Whaleback Light marks the mouth of the Piscataqua River between New Castle, New Hampshire and Kittery, Maine. It is located on a rocky outcrop offshore southwest of Fort Foster and south of Wood Island in Kittery, and guards the entrance to Portsmouth Harbor, N.H. The original light was completed in 1841, the current granite tower was built by Gen J.C. Duane in 1872. The base of the orignal tower supports the metal structure supporting the horn masts and other auxiliary functions. In this near view the lighthouse and adjoining fog horn tower appear to be sitting in water. A man can be seen working from a scaffolding on the shore side of the horn tower where a ladder is standing. A closed passage way joins the two structures about a third of the way up from the foundation. A small boat is pulled up on a bit of ledge on the mainland side .The skyline of the mainland is visible in the distance.
