Great Duck Island Light, Maine, built in 1890. Great Duck Island is located 5 1/2 miles southeast of Bass Harbor at the outer entrance to Frenchman's Bay. Visible on the shore line is Great Duck Island Light, built by Major W.J. Stanton, with lightkeepers house attached, as well as several other homes. The island once had families enough to maintain a school. The light was automated in 1986. The light station has been owned by the College of the Atlantic since 1998. COA uises it as a research station. The rest of Great Duck Island is now owned by the Maine Chapter of the Nature Conservency. Large numbers of seabirds find nesting grounds there. Island is not open to public.
