Corner Washington & Main Belfast Coliseum

The corner of Washington & Main Streets during the 1903 Old Home Week celebration of Belfast's Semicentennial of becoming a city. In this view we can see a man crossing Main Street at the intersection of Washington Street. You would, shortly, arrive at the waterfront if you proceeded to the right in this photograph. Across the street are several businesses. The first one at the corner of Washington Street appears to be a seller of an assortment of items as evidenced by the wash tub and wash board to the left of the entrance and a lobster trap to the right. Next (set back) is the City Lunch Car followed by Fred Timm's Shoe Shop in the Allen Brothers building. Mr. Timm was a custom boot and shoe maker. He was born in Germany and began operating in Belfast in 1879. In addition to the boot and shoemaking, shoe repair was included at the establishment. Along with two assistants, Mr. Timm was able to fill orders without long delay. He also kept on hand and made to order, kip boots for farmers at the price of $3 per pair. Next is H. M. Stevens featuring fruit, confectionery goods, cigars and tobacco products as well as a lunch room. The large building with the cupola was Edgar Hanson's Coliseum & Carriage Repository. The Coliseum burned twice (1917 & 1929) and was rebuilt each time. It burned in 1974 for the final time while housing the Home Furnishing Company and McLellan's Store.
