Now Dr. Small's residence High St.

Dr. Foster Small's residence High St. across from the Anderson School Dr. Foster C. Small was born in Swanville on the 4th of December in 1885, the son of Charles E. and Hattie E. Small. He taught school in Searsport and Swanville before attaining a medical degree from the University Of Vermont College Of Medicine in the class of 1912. He returned to Belfast and started a practice in his High Street residence. By 1917 he had established a maternity hospital in his home. In 1922, he became affiliated with the Bradbury Memorial Hospital, as Chief of Medicine. In 1927, he joined the staff of the Waldo County General Hospital, where for many years, he was one of two surgeons. At the age of 40, he became the youngest person to be elected the Mayor of Belfast, a position he held from 1926-1929. He served as President of the Maine Medical Association in 1950 and was the recipient of the Belfast Improvement Group Community Service Award in 1973. He died in Belfast on March 2, 1976, at the age of 90. His obituary in the Republican Journal dated March 4, 1976 includes this tribute: "He traveled thousands of miles by horse and buggy, homemade snowmobile, Model T Ford and various other modes of transportation. when necessary. to attend to of his patients and the needs of his community."
