Capt. R.H. Coombs with horse & Sleigh in front of his furniture and undertaking business on lower Main Street in Belfast.Feb 1896 Capt. Robert Hudson Coombs, the son of the late Capt. Robert Coombs was born in Islesboro on July 5, 1828. He followed the sea from childhood, and took command of a schooner when only sixteen years old. He was master of several large barks and ships, and retired in 1889. He was married to Harriet Pendleton Coombs (1831 - 1894). When Captain Coombs retired from going to sea, he purchased a furniture and undertaking business and operated it as R. H. Coombs & Son, in partnership with his son Charles. He died Nov. 7, 1897. Charles took over the business after his father's death and concentrated on the funeral home business. The original location was on lower Main Street. Capt. Coombs' grandson, Horace operated the funeral business, relocated to Church Street, until his retirement in 1969
