Square Dancing 16

This image shows a room crowded with square dancers. The focus is on a line of couples holding hands and processing to the left. A different square performing the same move in another direction is visible at the right.

As the series progresses the participants appear increasingly at ease as they gain confidence.

Ruohomaa focusses on how the particpants' interplay reflects the process of learning amidst the sometimes awkward and unfamiliar proximity of neighbors and strangers. In this improvised dance hall Kosti finds his preferred subject matter: the folkways of ordinary people at work and as here, at play.
