Fryeburg Me. 19t

"Fryeburg Me. 19t" Town Building, Street Scene, Tree From "Fryeburg Maine: An Historical Sketch" by John Stuart Barrows (1938), pg. 274: "In the dooryard of the Isaiah Warren House on Portland Street, is an elm that is noted and known all over the country. It is called, 'The Doughnut Tree', because a large branch has grown in such a way as to make a complete circle near the ground, and then has kept on, growing up to a proportionate height to the other limbs. It is perhaps the most photographed elm tree in Maine, and it has held in its curve children of several generations, adding to the picturesqueness."
