View at Corea Me. 7.
View at Corea Me. Waterfront, Rocky Coast, Harbor, People in Rowboats, Dock, Buildings, *peapods This view of Corea was taken from the rocks on the west side of the harbor, alongside the 1907 Yellow Store. It shows a view from the water of houses along Crowley Island Road. The two houses on the left, belonged, respectively, to Daniel Young and Ephraim Crowley, descendants of early settlers. They still stand, but the other buildings shown all burned. In 1843 Capt. Nathaniel Crowley of Addison married Isabella Young of Indian Harbor (Corea). Their 14 children and their descendants made up a significant portion of the village population, especially in the vicinity of Crowley Island. The photograph shows a number of tools from the fishing trade. In the foreground is a tar pot, used for dipping the warp lines used on lobster traps. Round-topped wooden traps are stacked next to the boathouse on the far side of the harbor. The arm of a heister (hoist) can be seen angling out over a wharf. Double-ended punts sit on their mooring or are being rowed across the water, but for some reason, not a single fishing boat is in sight. *a clinker-built (lap strake) open double-ended boat used for fishing in Maine
