Harbor Island Minturn Me. 77.
Harbor Island Minturn Me. Harbor Island, Waterfront, Coast, Sailboats, quarry Industry, Tents This is a c. 1910 scene of the Baird, Stinson and Staples quarrying operations in Minturn on Swan's Island. The view across Burnt Coat Harbor is of the two Hub Islands, Harbor Island on the right, and Stanley Point on Swan's Island to the left. The piles of stone with the tents over them, where workers cut the granite to size for paving stones, were called "motions." The quarry was higher up the hill. The stone was transported downhill on a track to the wharf. It was loaded on barges for shipment to Boston, New York, and other destinations where Swans Island stone would pave city streets. The quarry closed during the Depression due to lack of payment by creditors.
