School House Atlantic Me. 72.

School House Atlantic Me. School, Buildings, Outhouse, Lawn, Cupola The Atlantic Schoolhouse on Swan's Island was built around 1900 by Linwood E. Joyce (1869-1954). It had two rooms and served the village of Atlantic from 1903 until 1951 It closed shortly before the three Swans Island schools consolidated in 1954. The building was sold to Everett Kent, who sold it to playwright Virgil Geddes and his wife, Minna. Virgil Geddes was a well-known poet, playwright, editor and critic, and Minna wrote a biography of the famous dancer Isadora Duncan, for who she had worked. The couple made the schoolhouse into a home and lived there during the 1970s and 1980s. Minna bequeathed the building to the Swan's Island Educational Society to be used as a library in 1990. After years of fundraising, the doors were opened in 1998. It stood as a great place to gather. On July 24, 2008 the building was struck by lightning in the early morning hours and burned to the ground. A new library was raised on the original site and opened its doors in 2011.
