D.J.. Noyes Store and Res. Stonington Me. 30a.
"D.J.. Noyes Store and Res. Stonington Me. 30a." Image shows the pharmacy and home of D. Jewett Noyes at center, shortly after its construction around 1910. The building stands right on the street front, in contrast to the older houses adjacent. Lake's business occupied a prominent site in the heart of Stonington's small downtown. The storefront is embellished with an elegant sign and window signs for "Cigars and Tobacco" and "Confectionary". The building, which is essentially a traditional, gable-roofed frame structure, sports a false parapet roofline in front to give a more modern, commercial aspect. The photographer has posed several people on the sidewalk to animate the scene. The smart new building projects a sense of prosperity and progress. However, Stonington's boom town days were passing. The granite quarrying industry would seriously wane in the 1930s, as its product was superceded by the use of steel and concrete in construction.
