Cottages at Stonington Me. 48.

"Cottages at Stonington Me. 48." Image looking north up unpaved Pleasant Street near the top of the hill, where two houses stand amongst granite ledges, silhouetted against the sky. The dormers and bays on the larger house seem directed for views over the town and harbor. According to the Postcard Series, this house was built by C.H.S. Webb, owner of Webb's Grocers on Main Street in town, and "old packing crates from Webb's store are still visible on walls inside the house. Later the house was owned by Ray and Nina Gross, grandparents of Layton Gross, Deer Isle historian. The house on the right was probably also built by Webb about 1890 or 1910. The ledge in front of the house [in the foreground] was a small paving stone quarry." The area cut into the ledge, creating a raised stone platform for the house, is clearly apparent in the image.
