Goss Res. Stonington Me. 44.

"Goss Res. Stonington Me. 44." Image looking east on Sand Beach Road, with Moose Island Cove on the right. The "Goss" house is probably the one at center. The name was a prominent one on Deer Isle; Job Goss pioneered the quarrying of granite here in the 1860s, and his son John L. Goss took over quarries on Moose and Crotch Islands. "Goss Pink" was a prized granite, sold for the construction and embellishment of important buildings and monuments in New York City and Washington, D.C. The house, typical of coastal houses built in the second quarter of the 19th century, has a later addition with a Mansard roof, considered stylish in the 1870s. The narrow, unpaved road hugs the shoreline. A couple of men are out in a rowboat with a canoe bow.
