Central Square, Stonington Me. 29.

"Central Square, Stonington Me. 29." Image of three, mid-19th century frame buildings with storefronts at an unpaved intersection at the east end of Main Street in Stonington, looking north. The street continues up Thurlow's Hill to the east out of the picture. The photograph was taken during the town's "boom town" years as a granite quarrying center around the time it incorporated in 1897. In the middle of the intersection is a fountain for watering horses. A boy stands in the street in front of Philip Crockett's mens' clothing, shoe and boot store. Part of Small's Pharmacy is visible at the far left. The building in the middle houses Small's Drug Store; painted signs on the storefront indicate tobacco, cigars and smoking products were also carried. Canvas awnings shade the large, south-facing display windows from the low-angled nothern sun. Next door is a hardware store, with a couple of reel mowers, rakes, pots and pans, and rolls of wiring arrayed on the front stoop and porch. A baby carriage is parked on the wooden sidewalk to the right, at the foot of the stairs up to the Telephone Company's Central Office. A woman is visible looking out the curtained second story window on the right.

The building on the left is Philip Crockett's clothing store. Small's Drug Store is next to it. On the right is a hardware store in a building that at one time housed the telephone office and no longer exists. In the center of the square is a watering trough for horses.
