Post Office, So. Brooksville Me. 14.

"Post Office, So. Brooksville Me. 14." Post Office, Street Scene, Buildings, Stores, People, Car The early automobile and woman in this photo look like those in photo #102495, so the family must have made a stop at Chatto's store while they were out for their ride. The South Brooksville Post Office is in the same building as the store, behind the group posing for the photo. The Telephone sign on the store, above the automobile, indicates that telephone bills may be paid and telegrams sent from there. The house with the twosome on the porch, which is still standing, was originally the Aiken house, built in 1796 as a halfway house between Deer Isle and Castine. It sheltered many a becalmed or storm-driven Deer Isle fisherman bound to or from Castine, where he sold his fish. Aiken had a land office business in the house, selling New England rum and other drinks. Eben Chatto bought the house in 1871. The Jay Condon house (later owned by Bessie Wardwell) is to the right of the store. The road is today's Route 176. Credit: Berwyn Peasley
