Lily White Codfish box top from Slade Gorton & Co.
Wooden Lily White Codfish box top made for Slade Gorton & Co. of Gloucester, Massachusetts circa 1940. Slade Gorton & Co. and its subsidiary Rocky Bay Fishing Company was a Gloucester and Boston, Massachusetts company, that at the time of this box top, that sold salted codfish. Although Maine did not have a salt cod processing plant at this time, Maine-caught codfish would have gone to Gloucester to be processed. Salt cod was a popular dish for the workers at Jonesport Shipyard, where this box top was found.
