Carry Away Sloop

Carry Away Sloop

In this view we see a worn-out carry away sloop grounded out against the Fish Factory dock at the east end of Center Harbor, Brooklin, Maine (current location of Brooklin Boat Yard). These gaff-rigged, double-ended sloops transported sardines from the weirs to the factories before boats with engines took over and became known as sardine carriers. This sloop appears to be abandoned. She is well worn, is without a mainsail, and is being kept from falling over by her throat halyard and its connection to a landline cable led from the far side of the shed. Also seen in the foreground is a rowboat with its mooring line tied to some unseen item. Wood is everywhere here, and shows what can be done with wood when fashioned into pilings, boards, shingles, and the  spars, frames and planking for boats. Manpower and iron spikes and nails are the other necessary ingredients. - Maynard Bray 2024
