Close up view of Clephane at the helm of the launch CARSLOGIE.

Close up view of Clephane at the helm of the launch CARSLOGIE. This boat is likely the boat whose name may have been changed from LITTLE PRINCESS in1912 to CARSLOGIE in 1913. The handrails look new in the 1913 photos. This photograph shows the boat going past the Brooklin, Maine steamboat wharf just northwest of the yacht club, or from the yacht club wharf itself if it still existed in 1913. This series of photographs could be a sweep-past for the purpose of taking photographs because the boat is moving faster than it would be for docking—although the fenders atop the cabin, the young man with the boathook in hand, and the line coiled on the foredeck might indicate docking is a possibility—perhaps on the next sweep. There is an elegant tender complete with a lettered backrest being towed astern on a short scope to avoid fouling its painter in the big boat's propeller.  Tufted cushions and throw pillows enhance the seating and the polished hand grabs help ensure that passengers do not accidentally fall overboard. The engine, I believe, is in the cockpit, boxed in, with hinged covers for access. Inside the trunk cabin are probably a couple of berths and perhaps a toilet. There might even be a small stove near the bulkhead, thus justifying the foredeck hatch as a second means of egress in case of a fire. There are oarlocks mounted on the coaming and a long oar is visible in the cockpit to provide auxiliary power if the engine fails. Also, if the fog rolls in, there is an air horn permanently mounted adjacent to the companionway. For nighttime use, there is a bracket for kerosene running lights just aft of the life ring, on each side. It is a really lovely little cabin launch and seats a decent crowd of passengers.(Maynard Bray, July 2024)
