Navigational Instrument: quadrant, boxed

15.5" x 12" quadrant made by Aaron Breed in Boston, MA in the c. 1850. Contained in a step box. A quadrant is a measuring instrument used primarily in navigation. Marked: "R. Rowland, Bristol" and on scale bottom of box "Aaron Breed, Mathematical Instrument Maker, Broad St., Boston." Black wood frame with brass mirror mounts, sight, and index arm. The vernier scale is on an ivory insert. The name R. Rowland, Bristol appears on the scale. Dovetailed, "stepped cover" oak case, triangular with curved end ("keystone case").
