37" metal sword made by Ames Manufacturing Co. in Chicopee, MA c. 1855. Has a leather scabbard with a belt. Ames Manufacturing Co. was one of the Union's most important manufacturers of side arms, swords, and light artillery, and the third largest producer of heavy ordnance during the Civil War. This sword was formerly owned by Captain Jesse Thayer Carver (1833-1890), an officer who served in the US Navy during the Civil War in the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron, tasked with disrupting Confederate shipping from Cape Henry, Virginia to Key West, Florida. In 1865, he served aboard the FLAMBEAU as acting Ensign. Many Searsport ships came under fire from Confederate privateers far from the American continent. Before and after he service, he captained cargo brigs, barks, and ships. His last command, aboard the ship ST. MARY in 1890, ended when the ship collided with the MAGELLAN and limped back towards Port Stanley, the Falkland Islands for repairs. The ship went ashore, failing to reached safety and all but Captain Carver abandoned ship and made their way by small boat to Port Stanley.
