Sloop WAVE CREST
23'L x 8'3" beam wooden gaff-rigged cruising sloop WAVE CREST made by Cobb Brothers Boatyard at Brewer, ME in 1917. The sloop was made for and designed by the artist-author, George Wasson, and is so marked. Varnished wood and white-painted exterior and interior. Some cosmetic restoration by the museum. Tiller carved by George Wasson. For the last 14 years of his life, Maine author and artist George Wasson roamed Penobscot Bay in this simple little sloop. When he grew too frail to sail, he slept aboard his boat in the summer in Castine. After his death, WAVE CREST passed through the hands of his until coming to the museum in 1968. Wasson designed his boat using a model, selected the timber and worked alongside the builders at Cobb's, some of the last generation of wooden ship builders on the Bay. Her rigging was workboat simple and she was never engined. Wasson carved her ornate tiller and name board. Wasson is best known for his book SAILING DAYS ON THE PENOBSCOT. Many of the stories he collected may have been first told in WAVE CREST's cabin. Gift of Mr. Francis Hatch.
